ALT Hotels Head for Halifax

GM Mark Schaay to welcome guests at chic new ALT Hotel Halifax Stanfield.

It debuts this spring, the ALT Hotel Halifax Stanfield… Groupe Germain Hospitalité’s first foray into Atlantic Canada. But this 169-room, $27-million alternative hotel promises the Maritimes more than just a comfortable, functional boutique-style hotel. It promises a boutique-style hotel with a twist.

Chic design, yes. Ultra cool atmosphere, naturally. Opportunities to browse Collection ALT for home and travel essentials, of course. But this time ALT’s signature no-frills-chic hotel experience comes seamlessly attached to an international airport—the Halifax Stanfield International Airport—via a covered walkway that’s a first for both Halifax and ALT. “It’s an indoor pedway system,” explains Mark Schaay, the hotel’s newly appointed General Manager. “You don’t even have to go outside. In Halifax there’s no other hotel at the airport that is as close as this, all others are a shuttle away.”

Schaay reports that Halifax Stanfield is one of Canada’s quickest emerging airports, with an incredible 3.6 million people travelling through it in 2012, many of them en route for business. As a result, this new ALT has been built with the business traveller in mind, featuring 6,700 square feet of meeting space and amenities to service the needs of the business traveller.

Indeed, the new hotel’s design follows the style template established in Groupe Germain’s ALT properties in Toronto, Montréal and Québec City: ambiance and comfort coupled with smartly integrated workstations and technological features.

The hotel’s hip, living room-like lobby includes lounge-friendly furnishings, grab-and-go meals, a bar and… yes, even a pool table. There’s also a swimming pool at the ALT Halifax Stanfield, a first for a Groupe Germain property. For his part, Schaay is enthused to help Groupe Germain bring ALT to Halifax. Some guests may know him from Hôtel Le Germain Calgary where he joined the team back in 2009, in time for the hotel opening. He moved eastward in 2012 to oversee the final stages of construction and prepare for the opening of ALT Hotel Halifax Stanfield.

These cute plastic pitchers and coloured glasses, from Collection ALT for the home, are sturdy and durable. They are available for purchase in all ALT Hotels and at

There is one final aspect of the hotel’s launch both Schaay and his team are excited to be involved with: a collective work of art in the hotel’s new lobby. ALTEXPO is a mural made up entirely of images submitted via Instagram. While the mural is fixed, interspersed throughout will be LCD screens instantly displaying images sent by guests checking-in and out of this hip Halifax hotel… another beautiful first for the Maritimes. See AltExpo on the hotel’s website for more details…
